Plans for this unique story and a half “Acadian” style cottage began in earnest with the building permit submission in the fall of 1907 and building costs totaling $2,260. Miss Ella Miller, daughter of John J. Miller (well-known Dallas citizen, ex-Confederate soldier, and builder of the home), moved into this honeymoon cottage shortly after marrying her groom, Rufus B. Wallace. A proof-reader and printer, Mr. Wallace passed away in 1946, but Ella continued to live here until the 1950’s, regaling neighborhood kids with the true story of how a creek used to flow where this home stands.
Roughly twenty five years ago, another previous owner expanded into the extremely large original attic to create 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a common area. The downstairs layout probably changed, but original features of the home include the fireplace, seven panel door in the dining room, clawfoot tub, and pine wood floors. The current owners have made updates to the kitchen, staircase, and have future plans for the upstairs. Outside you’ll notice the garden bed edgings are reclaimed trolley rail ties from the recently unearthed, century old streetcar line that bisected the neighborhood on Collett Avenue and connected it to downtown.
